Family Timeline

For seven generations, Hoare Banks Stonemasons has grown to become a respected name in Dorset and the South of England. With a legacy of prestigious projects and a commitment to quality craftsmanship, we continue to shape the future of stonework.

First Generation

The Hoare family has been widely recognised for their exceptional stonemasonry skills since William Hoare founded the business in 1810, under the name Hoare and Sons.

William laid the foundation for a legacy of craftsmanship that would endure for generations. At the time, the business was primarily focused on small-scale building projects within the local community, using stone sourced from nearby quarries, which provided easy access to high-quality, local materials.

William’s hands-on approach and attention to detail quickly established his reputation for excellence in the region. His projects, ranging from rural homes to modest public buildings, showcased the fine stonework and precision that became synonymous with the Hoare name.

Second Generation

When Robert George Hoare, William’s only son, took over the family business, he secured a small plot in Shooter’s Hill, Woolwich, where he continued producing stonework and overseeing stone restoration projects across the region.

With a keen eye for opportunity, Robert recognised the growing demand for memorial masonry in the city. He began to specialise in creating bespoke memorials and building a reputation for high-quality craftsmanship. Under his leadership, the business maintained its traditional roots while expanding into this new specialised field.

Third Generation

William Alford Hoare, the eldest son of Robert Hoare, was one of seventeen children and the only one to pursue a career in stonemasonry. In 1894, he relocated the family business to Dorset, acquiring land on Gloucester Road in Boscombe, and named it W. A. Hoare & Sons (Sculptors) Ltd.

William became a pivotal figure in the local community, contributing to significant building and memorial projects, including the Corpus Christi Church and the Convent of the Cross. Among his notable works is the Bournemouth War Memorial, a poignant tribute to local servicemen, reflecting his dedication to enhancing the region’s cultural heritage.

Fourth Generation

William and Reginald Hoare played crucial roles in the family stonemasonry business. Working alongside their father, the business became a cornerstone of craftsmanship in the community. Following their father’s retirement, William and Reginald took the helm, demonstrating strong leadership and a keen eye for detail, bringing fresh ideas and design skills.

Together, the brothers collaborated on various projects, creating stunning memorials and building works that showcased their expertise. Their dedication to quality and excellence solidified the company’s reputation.

Fifth Generation

Reginald’s sons, Raymond and Eric, took over the family business, with Raymond managing W. A. Hoare and Sons Sculptors Ltd, while Eric led David Banks, a company their father acquired in Lymington during the mid-1970s.

Seeing the shared values and growth potential between the two companies, they decided to merge in the early 1990s. This strategic move resulted in the formation of Hoare Banks Stonemasons, the name under which the business still trades today.

Sixth Generation

Stephen Hoare, Raymond’s son, joined the family business in 1980 as a memorial fixer and letter cutter, mastering the craftsmanship passed down through generations, before taking on the role of Production Manager, where he oversaw operations.

In 1993, Stephen became Managing Director, guiding the company into new markets. Under his leadership, the business expanded into the marine and aviation sector, offering innovative lightweight stone materials. Steve’s vision has been instrumental in modernising the company while maintaining its long-standing reputation.

Seventh Generation

Marcus Hoare joined the family business in 2004, starting as a memorial fixer and mason. Over the years, Marcus expanded his skills to include stone fabrication, polishing, kitchen fitting, and building restoration, diversifying his expertise within stonemasonry. In 2015, he transitioned from hands-on work to a managerial role, and in 2021, was appointed Managing Director.

Today, Marcus is dedicated to advancing the family business by upholding the high standards of quality and craftsmanship established over generations. While honouring these traditions, he also embraces innovation, incorporating new technologies, processes and materials to improve efficiency and sustainability. His approach blends modern advancements with the company’s core values, ensuring it remains competitive and well-prepared for the future while maintaining its reputation for excellence.
